Citizen Accountability course to strengthen global sustainable development.

Today, the Gender Training Institute in Tanzania (GTI) together with TGNP Mtandao (TGNP) junctures 25 international scholars representing Civil Society Organizations from different countries, including: Tanzania, Zambia, Uganda, Kenya, Cambodia, Trinidad and Tobago, Ghana, Ethiopia, Nigeria and Zimbabwe for a 10 day training on Citizen Led Accountability (CLA). The initiative is an outcome of tripartite partnership between TGNP/GTI, Coady International Institute and Crossroads International. The training has been co-organized by TGNP/GTI and Coady International Institute from Canada to facilitate the trainings here in Tanzania.

The main purpose of the course is to strengthen the knowledge and practical skills participants can utilize to support citizen involvement with public and private sectors to improve accountability at all levels.

In addition, the course aims to create awareness on the rights and responsibilities of citizens to collectively address issues that affect their lives, and to have meaningful participation in development processes.

The training is to be conducted in a participatory teaching style, whereby each participant will have an opportunity to share his/her perspective around the course delivered. The training will also include field visits to grassroots Knowledge Centers administered by TGNP and community members. This will enable the scholars to learn how local government authorities can work together with the community to ensure sustainable development.

Speaking during the opening of the course, TGNP/GTI Executive Director, Lilian Liundi urged the students to utilize the course effectively, so that they can apply transformative knowledge in their own countries to solve problems around poor quality public services, mismanagement of resources, corruption, and social injustice.

Grace Ampomaa from Abantu for Development in Ghana, explains her expectation of the training, “I believe I will get tools and strategies that will help me to contextualize my advocacy work, and also enable me as a human rights activist to assist women in my country to advocate for their own rights, and what they stand for” she explains.

Generally, the course looks forward to expand civic spaces for collective voices and opinions that carries citizens’ concerns to the ensure inclusive development. This goes in hand with the sustainable development indicator of “Leaving No One Behind.”
